All About Digital Literacy

Last year (2024) Lloyds Bank released a study that included things like the fact that 16% of adults don’t meet the foundation level of essential digital skills. This includes things like: browsing the internet, opening and saving a word document, and using search engines to discover/learn new things.

Here at The Code Zone, we think that everyone should have at least a base level understanding of technology (especially as you’ll struggle to find a job nowadays that doesn’t have you answering at least one email!)

How we encourage members to build digital literacy skills

In our clubs, members will practice many skills to do with technology, even beyond coding. Knowing how to use your keyboard and mouse to navigate our website and search projects for the things we need are key things that are needed in this digital age no matter what you are doing! 

One thing that is becoming increasingly common nowadays is the online form, be it for doctors appointments, job applications, or even signing up for new services! A base level of computer literacy is paramount to navigating these forms and getting the help that many might need. This, alongside things like being able to connect to a new wifi network are things that fall into the banner of digital literacy, and are things that are super important to learn.

Digital literacy in the age of AI

A big thing nowadays is AI, a good digital literacy can help you understand how and why it works. This also allows you to think critically of these new technologies and form your own opinions on their use.
